You find a sofa that looks right, measure the wall, and then realize the hallway turns sharply before the living room. Avoid that familiar snag by treating the journey into the room as part of the fit, not an afterthought.
Map the whole route
Measure the room where the sofa will sit, but also check doorways, hallways, stairwells, and tight turns along the way. Note low ceilings, handrails, and other fixed obstacles; in apartments, a shared entrance or elevator can matter as much as your own front door.
Use painter’s tape to mark the sofa’s footprint on the floor. Then walk around that outline and check whether doors, drawers, and the route through the room still work.
Read dimensions carefully
Retailer listings may show overall width, depth, and height, but those numbers do not always tell you how the piece can be carried. Look for details such as removable legs, modular sections, or a specified delivery clearance, and confirm what each measurement refers to.
If you are comparing listings in different markets, check whether dimensions are shown in inches or centimeters before judging the fit. When a measurement or delivery detail is missing, ask the retailer rather than assuming.
Choose for everyday use
Think about who uses the sofa and what happens around it: a walkway to the kitchen, a spot for reading, or room for a side table. A slightly smaller sofa may serve the room better if it leaves those everyday paths clear.
